The Associate Director is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual donors and prospects capable of making major gifts of $100,000 or more in support of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, Medical Education and Alumni Philanthropy, this position develops and executes strategic fundraising plans designed to secure philanthropic support for institutional priorities, academic programs, research initiatives, patient care, scholarships, faculty support, and other mission-driven opportunities. The Associate Director manages a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors and is accountable for achieving annual fundraising goals and performance metrics, including dollars raised, portfolio activity, proposal development, and substantive donor engagement. Through effective relationship management, the Associate Director evaluates donor interests and philanthropic capacity, develops cultivation and solicitation strategies, and guides prospects through the donor lifecycle to maximize philanthropic investment and long-term engagement. Working collaboratively with faculty, department leaders, volunteers, and philanthropy colleagues, the Associate Director represents the institution to alumni, grateful patients, friends, foundations, and community partners. The position serves as a trusted advisor to donors and institutional stakeholders, helping align philanthropic interests with strategic priorities while ensuring an exceptional donor experience. The Associate Director operates with a high degree of independence and professional judgment, applying specialized fundraising knowledge and best practices to develop innovative solutions, resolve complex issues, and advance fundraising objectives. The position contributes to the development and implementation of fundraising strategies, policies, and operational practices that support effective, compliant, and donor-centered philanthropy programs. In addition to managing a personal portfolio, the Associate Director collaborates across development functions including annual giving, stewardship, prospect management, donor relations, communications, and special events to support integrated fundraising efforts and achieve organizational goals. The position may provide guidance, mentorship, or training to colleagues and serves as an ambassador for the mission and values of Maryland Medicine.
