About The Position

The Associate Director of Utility - Special Projects serves as a strategic and technical leader within the Special Projects Group, focused on expanding ECS's presence across the energy sector - particularly with large regulated electric utilities. Success in this role is measured by growth within key utility accounts, successful execution of complex projects, strengthened client relationships, and the ability to scale SPG's delivery model across multiple subsidiaries and clients. Drives growth through three core functions/areas of responsibility: Technical Leadership - Positioning ECS as a recognized energy leader within the energy community through active participation, thought leadership, and speaking engagements with professional organizations. Project Execution Leadership - Integrating and scaling the Special Projects Group project execution model across energy sector projects to deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes and reinforce ECS as a trusted partner for complex, high-value work. Strategic Leadership - Partnering with ECS's National Accounts and Marketing Groups to develop and implement a comprehensive Energy Sector Growth Strategy aligned with corporate objectives. Responsible for executing the three core functions with a primary focus on geotechnical engineering, environmental and building envelope services, and construction inspection and testing support for large, regulated utility clients. Collaborate closely with the Director of Energy (National Accounts) to support growth across all energy subsectors, including transmissions, substations, generation and renewables. Lead business development efforts with regulated utilities and support broader energy sector pursuits with EPC contractors, developers, and engineering consultants. Provide Executive-level oversight of geotechnical and related engineering services for complex energy projects, ensuring consistency, quality, and effective risk management. Act as a critical bridge between corporate leadership, subsidiary SPG groups, and local offices. Support project scoping, proposal development, and resource alignment. Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Principal-in-Charge (PIC) support across operating offices on key projects.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of strategic leadership experience within ECS's areas of expertise and broad knowledge and understanding of our primary service lines (geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, construction materials testing, and facilities consulting).
  • BS degree in engineering, related field, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • If driving for, or on behalf of, any ECS subsidiary, a valid driver's license is required.
  • Proven track record in developing high-impact client relationships.
  • Ability to drive strategic growth across utility markets.
  • Strong presentation skills, both internally and externally.
  • Excellent communication, client service, and relationship building skills.
