About The Position

The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) include the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park and La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park. The NHMLAC is seeking an Associate Director, Community Engagement for our Education & Programs department. The Associate Director, Community Engagement works collaboratively with and directory reports to the Vice President, Learning & Engagement to implement a comprehensive community engagement strategy from building community partnerships and programs, developing an internal community of practice for staff and facilitating outreach throughout Los Angeles County.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, History, or Natural Sciences.
  • Seven or more years of experience developing community partnerships and/ or educational programming
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and be an effective collaborator
  • Must possess cultural competence, sensitivity and knowledge of local communities
  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple priorities
  • Excellent follow through and attention to detail

Responsibilities

  • Develop strategic relationships with local community, county entities, and non-profit educational partners. Initiate and facilitate new key strategic partnerships to enhance the community engagement initiatives of the Museum and expand museum impact on Los Angeles communities and across supervisorial districts. Cultivate relationships with key Los Angeles County organizations i.e. libraries, LA Parks & Rec, LA Department of Arts & Culture, Slate Z, LA STEM Collective, etc
  • Oversight and integration of all community programs in support of the Museum vision and strategic goal of being a Museum of, for and with Los Angeles. Implement a strategy for developing community partnerships and programs both onsite, online and in satellite locations utilizing the community engagement framework of engage, listen and co-create/collaborate.
  • Lead a dynamic team of staff for the current and future engagement of our 50+ community partners within the Los Angeles community. Develop and facilitate the cross departmental Community Engagement Council as a professional development opportunity for internal staff.
  • Ensure that team members are supported in their growth and development as it relates to IDEA content and institutional initiatives, and are integrating this practice into program development.
  • Provide content for new and ongoing funding proposals and provide grant writing support in order to expand programming and impact. Develops internal reports as well as those needed by the Advancement Division in order to meet the requirements for funders.
  • Develop strategies and desired outcomes for community engagement initiatives to ensure impactful experiences, including data collection and evaluation of community programs.
