About The Position

GEICO is looking to hire an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in New Jersey courts and other first party insurance defense. The position is with GEICO Staff Counsel located in either West Orange, Piscataway or Marlton, NJ. The role involves researching laws, preparing legal briefs and opinions, rendering opinions on liability and damages, and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery. The Associate Counsel will also be responsible for depositions, examinations under oath, and defending assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearing.

Requirements

2 to 6+ years of experience in related field litigation
Insurance defense and/or personal injury litigation experience REQUIRED
Juris Doctor degree REQUIRED
Admission to the New Jersey Bar REQUIRED
Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in New Jersey and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
Must be able to travel as required, including but not limited to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences
Must be able to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone and written correspondence/email

Responsibilities

Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery
Conducting depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
Defending by trial or dispositive hearing, all matters assigned, as applicable
Documenting files in a clear, concise, professional written manner
Following complex instructions, resolving conflicts or facilitating conflict resolution
Utilizing strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills
Learning and applying large amounts of technical and procedural information
