About The Position

The May Institute is seeking an Associate Counsel with a strong interest in employment law to join their legal team. This role offers hands-on experience in employment law as a primary responsibility, with additional duties in contract management, regulatory compliance, and general legal matters. The Associate Counsel will partner closely with Human Resources, Finance, operational programs, external counsel, insurers, and other corporate stakeholders. A significant focus will be on employment law matters such as discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and wrongful termination, as well as reviewing and drafting employment-related agreements and responding to legal requests for employment records. Additional duties include contract negotiation and drafting, supporting the organization on the interpretation of applicable regulations, and assisting General Counsel with various legal matters. This is an opportunity for an individual with three to five years of legal experience in employment law to make an impact and grow their legal career.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Strong interest in and/or experience with employment law, including employment agreements, employment claims, severance/release agreements, and applicable employment regulations.
  • Strong legal research, analytical, writing, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to manage and organize files, records, and legal communications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Human Resources, Finance, operational leaders, external counsel, insurers, and other stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with contract preparation, review, and negotiation strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of procurement and contracting regulations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Partnering with HR and external employment counsel on matters involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, and other employment-related issues.
