About The Position

The Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) at Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH) serves as a key clinical and administrative leader supporting the Chief Medical Officer and the Medical Staff. The ACMO provides oversight of the Medical Staff Office and ensures compliance with regulatory standards, credentialing requirements, and performance monitoring processes. The ACMO works collaboratively with the Medical Staff President, Vice President, departmental medical directors, and hospital leadership to maintain and amend the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations as appropriate. The ACMO chairs and participates in committees as defined in the Bylaws and serves as a liaison between NCH and Mass General Brigham enterprise leadership. This role supports high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care across inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory services. The ACMO represents clinical leadership in senior leadership meetings and reports quality and professional practice matters to the Board of Trustees as designated.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree required
  • Board Certification in a recognized specialty required
  • Active Massachusetts medical license required
  • DEA registration required
  • Minimum 5–7 years of leadership experience in a hospital or healthcare organization
  • Experience in quality improvement, peer review, credentialing oversight, and regulatory readiness
  • Strong understanding of Medical Staff governance and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with OPPE, FPPE, credentialing, and provider performance management.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission standards and CMS Conditions of Participation.
  • Ability to lead in a small, high-performing, community-based hospital environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to navigate sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within the Mass General Brigham system while advocating for NCH-specific needs.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution, physician engagement, and team building.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health equity, professionalism, and patient-centered care.
  • Candidates must be willing to reside on Nantucket Island full-time as an active member of the island community.

Responsibilities

  • Lead oversight of the Medical Staff Office including credentialing, provider enrollment, OPPE, FPPE, and provider professionalism.
  • Partner with Medical Staff leadership to maintain and update Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations.
  • Chair and participate in committees as defined by the Bylaws, including peer review and quality-related committees.
  • Oversee provider performance review processes and ensure compliance with Joint Commission and regulatory standards.
  • Support site preparedness and readiness for accreditation surveys and regulatory visits.
  • Serve as a leading advocate for patient safety and high-quality care across all care settings at NCH.
  • Coordinate medical staff engagement in quality improvement, infection control, safety event review, health equity, and patient experience initiatives.
  • Collaborate with site-based quality teams to implement strategies developed by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO).
  • Support Professional Practice Evaluation processes and reporting to hospital leadership and the Board of Trustees.
  • Advise hospital leadership on operational and clinical policy matters affecting the medical staff.
  • Represent NCH CMOs on system-wide projects and enterprise committees.
  • Participate in senior leadership meetings to address clinical strategy, patient care delivery, workforce planning, and provider well-being.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of new medical staff members in collaboration with department leaders.
  • Promote strong physician engagement in a small community hospital environment with close interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Communicate proactively and consistently with practicing physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Represent clinical leadership at departmental meetings and Medical Executive Committee meetings.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and collaboration across departments.
  • Serve as a visible clinical leader within the Nantucket community.
