About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an Associate Chemist II to join the Chemistry section of the Hawthorne Laboratory within the Water Quality, Drinking Water Operations Directorate. This role involves performing laboratory analysis of various water samples, reviewing data, preparing standards and reagents, and ensuring compliance with Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulations. The position requires performing routine qualitative and quantitative analyses of drinking water and environmental water samples in accordance with regulatory requirements, using New York State-approved methods. Additional tasks include glassware washing, general laboratory support, maintaining Quality Control (QC) solutions, and managing the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). All tasks must adhere to applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations and DEP policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 16 semester credits in chemistry and 8 semester credits in any one or a combination of the following areas: chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, environmental science, forensic science, or other natural science.
  • At the time of appointment to a clinical laboratory, candidates must possess a valid License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the New York State Education Department. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • After meeting the minimum requirements described for Assignment Level I, at least two years of fulltime satisfactory experience performing chemical or physical analyses in a laboratory.
  • Candidates must live outside the five (5) boroughs or be permanent in the civil service title listed in order to be considered for appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine analytical samples accurately and precisely
  • Perform instrument calibration and maintenance
  • Familiarity with data compilation protocols, including use of data reporting programs associated with assigned instruments(s) and laboratory information management systems i.e. STARLIMS
  • Ensures data entries in notebooks and files of computer output are complete and legible
  • Maintain accurate electronic and written records
  • Review data, generate reports, prepare standards and reagents
  • Promptly submits data for review by specified deadline
  • Conduct research and investigations as directed by the supervisor
  • Prepare method SOPs under the direction of the supervisor
  • Prepare and maintain inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Laboratory analysis of samples for alkalinity, ammonia, phosphorus, nitrogen, organic carbon, chloride, sulfate, chlorate, chlorite and fluoride
  • Obtaining satisfactory calibration, QC, and proficiency test results
  • Preparing and maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Ensuring compliance with all Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulations
  • Glassware washing and general laboratory support
