About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an Associate Chemist I for the Drinking Water Operations Directorate, Water Quality Division at Hawthorne Laboratory in Hawthorne, New York. This role involves performing laboratory analysis of samples for physical analytes such as color, scent, turbidity, TSS, UV, HFS assays, and conductivity. The position also includes aqueduct sample collection, glassware washing, general laboratory support, maintaining laboratory QC, solution preparation, and LIMS work. The DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, responsible for providing high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing pollution.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 16 semester credits in chemistry and 8 semester credits in any one or a combination of the following areas: chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, environmental science, forensic science, or other natural science.
  • Possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.
  • At the time of appointment to a clinical laboratory, candidates must possess a valid License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the New York State Education Department.
  • Two years of fulltime satisfactory experience performing chemical or physical analyses in a laboratory (for Assignment Level II and above).

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to train on database systems such as the Agency’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Water Information Systems by Kisters (WISKI) data management systems
  • A general knowledge of laboratory instrumentation equipment
  • Familiarity with field sampling and data collection techniques
