About The Position

Perkins Coie LLP is seeking an associate to join its Chambers-ranked California team, which focuses on the intersection of urban development and the energy transition. The team represents innovators in shaping California's future, including developers of large mixed-use communities and key players in energy and infrastructure development. They also work with regulators and legislators to shape policy that supports California's housing, energy, and infrastructure needs. The role involves managing a sophisticated pipeline of high-impact land use and urban development projects throughout California, including R&D Hubs, Urban Redevelopment, Housing Innovation, Data Centers & Digital Infrastructure, Utility-Scale Renewables and Transmission, and Decommissioning projects.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of California land use or environmental/energy law experience.
  • Excellent academic record and a JD from an accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing with the California State Bar.
  • Excellent academic credentials are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in some or all of the following areas: California Planning & Zoning, State Housing Law, CEQA/NEPA, Regulatory Knowledge (Subdivision Map Act, Porter-Cologne Act, Clean Water Act, federal and California Endangered Species Act), Transactions, Litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Representing applicants through the entitlement process for large-scale residential, commercial, and renewable energy projects.
  • Navigating California’s evolving housing legislation—such as the Density Bonus Law, SB 330 (Housing Crisis Act), the Housing Accountability Act, and Builder’s Remedy—to streamline entitlements for high-density residential and mixed-use projects.
  • Advising on environmental review strategies and reviewing environmental documents with an eye toward streamlining and defensibility.
  • Handling transactional documents, including development agreements, leases, easements, and utility interconnections.
  • Representing clients in the defense of entitlements in California and federal courts.
