About The Position

CUNY’s Office of Library Services (OLS) seeks a highly motivated, creative, and detail-oriented individual to serve as our Associate Archivist for Curation & Outreach on the Cultivating Archives and Institutional Memory Project, funded by the Mellon Foundation. The individual in this role will source CUNY’s archival collections to create exhibitions and publications to share the rich history of CUNY with internal stakeholders and public audiences. They will also assist in a communications role, helping the team to document their work through photography, project website updates, and outreach publications such as newsletter items for internal CUNY audiences and funders. The Associate Archivist for Curation & Outreach will report directly to CUNY’s University Archivist and work two days/week out of the Office of Library Services’ offices at 555 W. 57th Street in Manhattan. This is a benefits-eligible, part-time position, working 20 hours per week. Application period closes on March 6th with online interviews the week of March 9th. The expected start date for this position is March 30th, lasting through the end of August 2026, with opportunity for reappointment through the end of February 2027.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in CUNY Queens College’s Graduate School for Library and Information Studies (GSLIS) or have graduated from GSLIS within the past two years (Spring 2024 or more recent).
  • Current students or recent graduates of the GSLIS Archives Certificate program preferred.
  • Coursework or professional experience in archives
  • Strong writing and organizational skills
  • Must be eligible to work for the CUNY Research Foundation (not already employed by the Research Foundation and able to work legally in US)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience creating exhibitions and publications with archival collections
  • Experience in communications role as a writer, photographer, videographer, or editor
  • Experience with archival digitization and description
  • Basic understanding of archival preservation and conservation issues/concerns
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace, JSTOR, Academic Commons and LibApps
  • Comfortable using spreadsheets
  • Creative, team player willing to be flexible and try new things

Responsibilities

  • Research and writing for curated projects featuring CUNY’s archival collections, which may include, but not limited to: Creating new collections on the CUNY Digital History Archive Creating research guides on topics found across multiple campus archives Creating curated compilations in JSTOR Forum Drafting social media posts for CUNY social channels Editing Wikipedia articles Publishing articles in professional magazines and newsletters Preparing assets for publication and doing research in response to press inquiries undefined
  • Digitization and archival description for key assets identified for curated projects
  • Maintenance of tracking spreadsheets and files assembled for curated projects
  • Occasional travel to CUNY archives for research visits
  • Documenting live events and project outcomes for outreach communications
  • Updating the project website with news and resources from the team
  • Other duties as assigned
