About The Position

Milliman's Seattle Health Practice is seeking an Associate Actuary (ASA) with expertise in health actuarial work, specifically focusing on Value Based Payments (VBP) within government programs like Medicare and Medicaid. The role demands strong creative actuarial skills, effective communication and interpersonal abilities, and excellent organizational talents. A high degree of self-motivation and the capacity to lead a team of consultants are essential for success. Milliman offers comprehensive on-the-job training in consulting skills and advanced actuarial techniques. The Seattle Health Practice collaborates with a diverse range of organizations, including insurance companies, health plans, government agencies, healthcare providers, reinsurers, Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), health technology firms, and employers. The team comprises over 180 actuarial professionals, supported by expert consultants, IT specialists, and dedicated operations staff. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related field
  • ASA designation
  • 7+ years of healthcare actuarial experience, with at least four (4) years in a consulting or advisory role supporting health plans, state Medicaid agencies, or ACOs.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience with VBP arrangements (e.g., shared savings, capitation, and other provider risk arrangements).
  • Minimum of three (3) years leading Medicare and/or Medicaid program VBP work, including delegating work to and mentoring junior staff.
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Some knowledge of SAS, SQL, Python, or R
  • Strong understanding of the US healthcare system
  • Demonstrable skills in presenting technical concepts to a non-technical audience in an understandable way
  • Excellent communication, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work both independently and in team environments
  • Seeks to learn and understand project goals in service of finding new and better ways to solve client problems
  • Comfortable adapting existing data sources and methodologies in response client problems
  • Can explain complex concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment where client satisfaction is key

  • Experience with current Medicare and Medicaid VBP programs (REACH/LEAD, MSSP, AHEAD, TEAM, managed Medicaid or Medicare Advantage provider risk) is a plus.
