About The Position

Are you passionate about inclusive education and tech-savvy solutions that empower learners? We’re looking for a collaborative, student-focused individual to join Accessibility Services as an Assistive Technology Advisor—a key role supporting students with disabilities in becoming confident, independent learners. Reporting to the Team Lead, Assistive Technology, you’ll review medical documentation, assess technology skills, provide training on assistive technologies, create alternate formats for class materials, and implement assistive technology accommodations. You’ll be a go-to resource for students and instructors navigating the world of assistive tech. The Assistive Technology Advisor supports student success by promoting independence, self-advocacy, and equitable access to learning. This role assesses students’ accessibility needs, develops accommodation plans, provides assistive technology training and support, recommends and manages specialized equipment and software, and collaborates with faculty and staff to create accessible learning environments. The position also works closely with internal and external stakeholders to acquire accessible materials, improve accessibility processes, provide training and consultation, and ensure students with disabilities receive the tools and supports needed to thrive academically. NorQuest College offers a wide range of services to support students with experience of disability. These include Assistive Technology, Academic Coaching, Accommodated Exams, Sign Language Interpretation, and more. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline – education, educational technology, assistive technology or disability related field. preferred; equivalent experience and education will be considered.
  • 3+ years of learner-facing experience in a student services post-secondary environment, with demonstrated leadership experience through projects, initiatives, or teams.
  • Experience providing accommodation services to students with disabilities, including interpreting disability documentation and developing accommodation supports.
  • Experience training students in the use of assistive technology and assistive technology strategies, including foundational technology skills.
  • Experience with adult learners with diverse needs, including learners who are EAL, learners with varying levels of digital literacy, etc.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and project management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the SETT (Student, Environment, Task, Tool) assessment paradigm is an asset.
  • Excellent understanding of disabilities, accommodations, and assistive technologies.
  • Advanced experience with various operating systems, applications, and educational technologies (e.g. Windows, MacOS, Chrome OS, iOS, Android, MS Office Suite, Adobe, Foxit Phantom PDF, Accommodate, etc).
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to identify priorities and plan workload appropriately.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Develop and deliver assistive technology strategies, recommendations, and training that support students' academic and occupational goals.
  • Ability to promote, educate, and advocate for accessibility and disability inclusion through training, consultation, and participation in college-wide initiatives and committees.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct one on one assistive technology training to students with disabilities.
  • Provide training and develop assistive technology strategies specific to the student and their device.
  • Assess existing technology skills and needs of students with disabilities.
  • Administer college-owned AT equipment and AT software portals.
  • Assist with AT software and app installation on student owned computers and devices.
  • Input and manage accommodation data on relevant college systems (PeopleSoft, Accommodate, etc.)
  • Work with publishers, external agencies, instructors, and Academic Development to arrange alternate format materials for students.
  • Create alternate format class materials based on student need.
  • Purchase, maintain and track assistive technology equipment and software.
