About The Position

WSP is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Architect for its New York City office, focusing on projects within the Transportation Facilities Group (TFG). TFG leads and designs projects supporting regional growth through transportation initiatives, aiming to develop solutions for complex transportation challenges. The role involves varied projects primarily in the NY Metro Region, with opportunities nationwide. The Senior Lead Architect will manage projects from inception to completion, including traditional and alternate delivery methods. Project types encompass pre-k through higher education, airports, intermodal hubs, rail infrastructure, and ADA improvements for clients such as NYCT, MTA Bus, LIRR, MNR, PANY&NJ, Amtrak, NYC SCA, design-build contractors, utilities, and NYCDOT. The role offers exposure to diverse project types and disciplines within the New York Office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture with a focus in facility type experience
  • 10+ years of relevant post-education experience in the learned discipline.
  • Professional licensure (Registered Architect in NY)
  • Highly proficient with architectural principles, practices, process, design/build, and their application to project work-related issues.
  • Strong creative, visualization, and technical drawing skills.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant construction laws, state and city building codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Highly proficient with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of architectural principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons and illustrations to appropriate regulations.
  • Experience with planning and conducting inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of buildings, facilities, or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Works independently to provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.
  • Strong communication skills including verbal and written.
  • Thorough understanding of project management tools including scheduling, budgeting, risks registers.

Responsibilities

  • Effective leadership, bringing teams together to develop solutions that meet project needs and goals.
  • Developing/assembling design teams and envisioning project approaches.
  • Applying high-level architectural techniques and processes to identify improvements for various construction project phases, including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Performing professional architectural work and conducting complex investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, facilities, transportation channels, and operations to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Managing design, construction, rehabilitation, and remediation of building and infrastructure projects from inception to completion, ensuring durability and structural soundness.
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of advanced technologies, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies for safety and functionality, implementing future-ready solutions.
  • Leading larger-scale architecture projects, ensuring team members understand their roles and deadlines, preparing and overseeing project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking hours and expenses, supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
  • Reviewing and approving permit applications, design plans and specifications, integrated management plans, and periodic construction inspections for compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Meeting with public or private entities to discuss architectural/construction challenges and programs.
  • Mentoring staff to support their growth and professional development.
  • Coordinating and discussing project status with New York City office Senior Management.
  • Exercising responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
