About The Position

The 12th Judicial District Attorney's Office is seeking an in-house, dedicated and motivated Assistant Trial Attorney to join our team and manage the Lincoln County Magistrate Court. This position is ideal for an attorney who thrives in a fast-paced courtroom environment and is eager to gain substantial prosecutorial and trial experience. You will handle all aspects of criminal prosecution within the Magistrate Court, including case review, charging decisions, plea negotiations, motion practice, and regular court appearances. This position provides the opportunity to participate in jury trials frequently, allowing for the development of strong trial and courtroom advocacy skills.

Requirements

Basic knowledge and skills in the areas of criminal prosecution, rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure.
Basic knowledge and skills in public relations.
Basic knowledge and skills in organization.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to draft legal documents.
Ability to work effectively with other criminal justice agencies.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to research and analyze information and situations.
Ability to work independently and make decisions within guidelines.
J.D. degree.
Current license to practice law in New Mexico.

Responsibilities

Handle all aspects of criminal prosecution within the Magistrate Court, including case review, charging decisions, plea negotiations, motion practice, and regular court appearances.
Participate in jury trials frequently.
Work effectively with other criminal justice agencies.
Draft legal documents.
Research and analyze information and situations.
Make decisions to dismiss, proceed to trial or negotiate plea agreements.
Seek guidance from assigned supervisor and/or higher-level attorneys.
Go to crime scenes.
