About The Position

WSP is seeking an Entry Level Assistant Transmission Line Engineer for their Ann Arbor, MI office. This role involves participating in projects with the Transmission Line Team, contributing to the growth of the organization, and helping clients achieve their objectives and overcome challenges. The successful candidate will be involved in all facets of transmission line design, including new lines, relocations, upgrades, and fiber optic additions. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the power grid, the backbone of the modern economy. Transmission Line Design engineers are responsible for the long-term health of high voltage transmission lines by considering structure load development, hardware selection, and operating clearances under various weather conditions. The role utilizes PLS CADD Modeling software and aerial imagery to create line route representations and involves direct interaction with key stakeholders at utilities and their construction partners. Skills will be developed in designing models, procuring construction materials, and producing professional drawings for construction facilitation. WSP brings global expertise in power delivery, power generation, and program management, enhanced by the acquisition of POWER Engineers, Inc. and the addition of TRC Companies, which deepens their power practice and expands their energy advisory and intelligent grid services. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline (Civil Engineering Preferred).
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.
  • Familiarity with relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office software suite.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
  • Ideal coursework includes structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, soil mechanics, foundation design, and surveying.
  • Previous engineering design or drafting work experience, especially if related to civil and/or structural engineering, is desirable.
  • F.E. Exam completion, Engineer Intern (EI) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Execute the engineering of transmission projects up to 765kV.
  • Support the initial project execution layout to ensure an efficient and effective project plan has been established.
  • Maintaining a project budget and schedule.
  • Facilitate and adhere to WSP’s QA/QC procedures.
  • Develop transmission line design expertise pertaining to PLS-CADD, structure staking, foundations, assembly drawings, structure loading, material procurement, construction specifications, construction methods, construction estimates, and construction support.
  • Travel to field, as needed.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
