About The Position

WSP is seeking an Assistant Technician, Design Support for its Baton Rouge, Louisiana office, supporting the Power Delivery Distribution Houston/Baton Rouge team. Under general to minimal supervision, this role provides technical design and CADD support for projects across planning, transportation, infrastructure, and technical services business lines. The work includes developing skills and producing CADD designs for projects of basic complexity, as well as preparing accurate design-phase deliverables such as reports, technical memoranda, design manuals, plans and profiles, models, sections, details, specifications, and material lists. Deliverables must meet or exceed acceptable industry standards for design quality, accuracy, and functionality. The technician supports data collection and analysis, prepares precise drawings using 3D CADD software, assists with design details and calculations, and helps verify designs and resolve technical issues. The position collaborates with engineers and cross-functional technical teams, supports compliance with applicable codes and regulations, completes task-related training, and follows WSP policies and safety requirements. Work schedules may extend beyond a typical workweek to meet project needs, and occasional travel may be required. Relocation is not available. The role is based in WSP’s Baton Rouge office; the posting does not specify a workplace type.

Requirements

High school diploma.
At least 3 years of relevant post-education experience in the discipline, including prior drafting and design support experience.
Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Strong research and evaluation skills and an analytical mindset.
Interpersonal and communication skills to express ideas effectively and professionally to technical and non-technical audiences.
Self-leadership, attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, manage multiple tasks, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
Ability to work independently under general supervision and collaboratively as part of a team to meet business objectives.
Basic proficiency in technical writing, office automation, software, technology, mathematical principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
Record of upholding workplace safety and ability to comply with WSP health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules that meet project-specific requirements and may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

Collect, compile, and analyze information from work sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, specifications, technical drawings, sketches, diagrams, and other sources to support drafting and design.
Use 3D CADD software to assist with basic design details and prepare precise drawings.
Provide basic technical design assistance, including geometric dimensioning, tolerance and quantity calculations, and consideration of construction and maintainability requirements.
Assist with verifying calculations and designs, reviewing change orders, interpreting contract plans and specifications, and escalating issues or technical problems for resolution.
Work with cross-functional teams to execute project work.
Help ensure plans comply with city codes and state and federal regulations.
Prepare multiple versions of designs for engineer review.
Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects in accordance with contract requirements.
Collaborate with the engineer-in-charge and other technical professionals on assigned project phases, segments, checks, and tasks.
Complete training on assigned tasks and demonstrate basic knowledge of current drafting and design support practices.
Make responsible and ethical decisions regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and follow WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
