About The Position

The Assistant Teacher II will support teachers serving a diverse student population by assisting with the implementation of programs outlined in each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). This role involves adapting instruction to meet students' academic, medical, developmental, and technological needs. The Assistant Teacher II is expected to fulfill all teacher duties and responsibilities during periodic absences of the teacher and may assume all teacher duties during extended absences. The Kennedy Krieger School: Greenspring Campus High School is a nonpublic special education day program approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. Our 11-month program focuses on building essential skills based on Maryland State Department of Education standards and curricula, supplemented by instruction in art, music, physical education and fitness, health, life and social skills, career exploration and development, and vocational skills. Our mission is to empower students with diverse abilities to learn and develop lifelong skills in a safe and nurturing environment, with dedicated professionals partnering with the home, workplace, and community.

Requirements

  • Professional Crisis Management (PCM) training will be provided by the department, according to the individual program requirements. Employee must achieve and maintain certification (at the “Practitioner” level or higher) according to the timeline established within the departmental policy.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required.

  • Previous experience working with children with developmental disabilities is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the implementation of instruction in accordance with students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) in cooperation with a supervising teacher, using effective strategies for academic and behavioral success.
  • Prepare for and participate in parent conferences and interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Assume responsibilities during after school emergencies including but not limited to student supervision, phone communication, and written documentation.
  • Provide support and leadership for curricular and extra-curricular activities, special events, and projects that support student-life and promote a positive school experience.
  • Complete instructional-related duties as assigned by supervising teachers and administrators.
  • Provide independent instruction, supervision, and classroom management in the absence of the supervising teacher.
  • Implement behavioral protocols and assignments for students during instructional and non-instructional times.
  • Utilize instructional and non-instructional times in a professional manner in keeping with administrative guidelines.
  • Participate in and contribute to in-service training and staff meetings in a professional and collegial manner.
  • Assist with the implementation of technology in instructional design and delivery in accordance with supervising teacher’s directions.
