About The Position

Under the administrative direction of the Education & Early Childhood Services Manager and the Classroom Teacher and directly supervised by the ECE Coordinator/Site Supervisor, the Teacher’s Assistant ensures age and developmentally appropriate activities for all children.

Requirements

  • First Aid and CPR Certified
  • CDA Credential must be obtained and maintained within one year of hire.
  • Associate degree credential, or a state-awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential.
  • Experience teaching pre-school children, preferably in Head Start/Early Head Start classrooms; minimum of three years experience working with preschool aged children and families.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence, and read and interpret documents
  • Knowledge of various software programs such as MS Word, Excel, Power-Point, and Publisher.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with children and families both individually and in group settings for program enhancement needs.
  • Ability to organize and manage time effectively

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Teacher in planning and implementing a comprehensive program including CHSofNJ HS curriculum, and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Work in a team setting with all staff to determine individual needs of the children.
  • Assist the Teacher with set up and maintenance of an appropriate classroom environment, including organization of space and material storage.
  • Help supervise field trips and recreational activities.
  • Assist the Teacher in planning and participate in classroom activities with children.
  • Recommend ways of utilizing parent volunteers in the classroom and in other program activities.
  • Greet parents and children pleasantly and appropriately, ensuring a smooth transition into the classroom, a positive home-classroom connection and a family partnership.
  • Provide activities parents can do at home with their children to support the curriculum and the child’s learning. Maintain ongoing professional and appropriate communication with parents. Encourage parents to become involved in workshops, training and other Head Start activities.
  • Assist the Teacher in demonstrating to parent’s effective ways to reinforce the children’s needs in the home.
  • Maintain accurate child attendance records, USDA food records/reports, in-kind reports and other record keeping and reports as required. Keep all assigned records regarding classroom operations/children current and updated.
  • Participate in all staff meetings, and In-Service training.
  • Participate in designed career development activities.
  • Continue professional growth by participating in ongoing; ECE education, training programs, and workshops/conference, as budget allows.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with Agency policy and legal requirements.
  • Respect and maintain rights and privacy of all staff, parents, and children.
  • Attend mandated trainings and meetings, and seek out staff development opportunities.
  • Work as a team member with all staff and maintain a positive work ethic.
  • Adhere to NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.
