About The Position

This is a full-time, 40 hours a week, school-year-based position (August to May, 185 days a year) following the school calendar. The Assistant Teacher/Floater will work within the Head Start/Early Head Start program. The role requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, with a commitment to complete a Child Development Associates credential with infant/toddler coursework within the first year of employment. The position reports to the Teacher/Education Supervisor. Salary is determined by the Head Start budget based on education and experience. This is an 'at-will' position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficient in verbal communication.
  • Proficient in maintaining written documentation.
  • Ability to have good environmental awareness (visual and auditory responsiveness) to keep children safe.
  • Clear criminal records check (including child abuse registry check) prior to employment.
  • Screening physical with a tuberculosis screening upon hire.
  • Must obtain and continually maintain basic first aid and pediatric/adult CPR certification within 90 days of employment (or sooner if required by local/state regulations).
  • Valid driver’s license and be insurable by the ESU 13 insurance carrier and have a Motor Vehicle Record acceptable to ESU 13 (if applicable to drive agency vehicles).
  • Regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job.
  • Ability to perform identified tasks and possess and utilize identified knowledge, skills, and abilities and perform identified work activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in establishing a classroom structure that maintains a safe, healthy, and nurturing educational environment, implementing program curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and research-based.
  • Assist with all classroom activities including lesson plans, individualizing for children, anecdotal observations, supervision of children, screening, assessment of children, and maintaining documentation of program requirements.
  • Follow Nebraska state standards and child care guidelines for education and positive guidance.
  • Maintain standards of confidentiality regarding the program, children, families, staff, and community.
  • Maintain regular communication and information sharing with center staff and within ESU teams.
  • Interact in a skilled, respectful and sensitive manner to strengthen families as the primary nurturers of their children.
  • Display positive work ethic through attendance, punctuality, productivity, dependability, and reliability.
  • Promote positive parent and community involvement and document the in-kind match.
  • Encourage connections with other agencies and the community.
  • Recruit eligible children to ensure full enrollment.
  • Participate in and contribute to team meetings and program assessment to ensure a quality program.
  • Complete training as required by the program for professional growth.
  • Effectively use and maintain materials, supplies, equipment, facilities and grounds to ensure the facility meets local, state and federal requirements.
  • Assist in other classrooms, on the bus, with parent meetings or Policy Council when necessary.
  • Translate communication between program, child and family using family’s primary language when applicable.
  • Comply with the Head Start Performance Standards and ESU 13 Employee Performance and Code of Ethics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
