About The Position

The Assistant Tax Administrator supports the Tax Administrator in enforcing tribal tax codes, managing revenue compliance, and overseeing departmental operations under the General Revenue and Taxation Act. This role requires a strong blend of financial acumen, regulatory knowledge, and administrative oversight to ensure the integrity of tribal revenue systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Policy, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in tax administration, financial auditing, or government accounting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of tribal sovereignty, jurisdiction, and federal Indian tax law.
  • Proficiency in advanced accounting software, database management, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven ability to read, interpret, and enforce complex statutory codes and regulations.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check and maintain bonding eligibility.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of direct experience in tribal tax enforcement or tribal government finance.
  • Direct familiarity with Oil and Gas Severance, Motor Fuel, or Tobacco tax regulations.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation.
  • 1+ years of supervisory experience managing administrative or financial staff.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce Tribal Tax Codes: Direct compliance operations and enforcement for Sales Tax, Oil and Gas Severance, Motor Fuel, Motor Vehicle, and Tobacco Tax.
  • Administer Revenue Laws: Collaborate with the Tax Administrator to implement, interpret, and update regulations under the General Revenue and Taxation Act.
  • Provide Legal Case Support: Develop and organize documentation for the Commission and Tribal Attorney to resolve tax disputes and enforcement matters.
  • Manage Revenue Reconciliation: Oversee the reconciliation of tax revenues and monthly bank statements to ensure financial integrity.
  • Lead Annual Audits: Coordinate departmental records and serve as a key point of contact for external auditors during annual reviews.
  • Deliver Executive Reporting: Compile, analyze, and present periodic financial and compliance reports to tribal leadership.
  • Supervise Motor Vehicle Functions: Partner with the Tag Department to streamline motor vehicle registration and licensing workflows.
  • Optimize Data Systems: Manage tax databases, reporting software, and office automation tools to maximize operational efficiency.
  • Execute Strategic Directives: Perform senior-level administrative duties and act on behalf of the Tax Administrator when required. In charge of day-to-day operations while out of office with limited signatory authority unless otherwise communicated.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
