About The Position

Under the direction of the Head Swim Coach, the Assistant Coach will coach pre-competitive and competitive swimmers according to YMCA-USA and USA Swimming best practices and local protocols. They will be responsible for greeting parents and children, teaching strokes using a variety of drills and techniques, preparing practice sets, leading dryland and warmup activities, and attending scheduled meetings. The Assistant Swim Coach leads by example, using their training to perform rescues in and around the pool, assists in preparing the swim team area for workouts, and helps with appropriate stretching and warm-up/cool-down activities. They also assist with maintaining safety and discipline during workouts and meets, responding to individual participant needs, and providing demonstrations, explanations, and skill correction during workouts. Effective communication with athletes and parents, providing encouragement, and being a positive role model for youth are key aspects of this role, along with upholding YMCA Policies and Standards.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must pass YMCA background check
  • First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certifications from an accredited organization (American Red Cross, YMCA LG-v6, or similar) or ability to obtain immediately upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Teach strokes, skills, drills, and techniques in accordance with the current YMCA-USA and USA Swimming best practices and local procedures.
  • Be prepared and on time for practices, clinics, and meets in order to greet parents and participants.
  • Have all necessary equipment and a practice plan prepared before classes begin.
  • Remain on-deck after programs to greet parents and dismiss participants as well as clean up.
  • Record and track swimmer and participant personal records for each event and stroke.
  • Conduct and evaluate swimmers assigned according to standards set by the Head Swim Coach.
  • Understand the mission of the YMCA, incorporate the YMCA core values, and develop participants’ spirit, mind and body through competitive swimming.
  • Establish good rapport with parents, participants, and staff.
  • Communicate with participants and families through a variety of methods including in-person, email, and through approved app notifications.
  • Collect media to show swimmer progress, for parent communication, and for marketing using approved devices.
  • Be present for all practices, clinics, and meets during a season and/or document any necessary substitutions, getting supervisor approval prior to absences whenever possible.
  • Provide safe and clean environment for participants.
  • Dress according to the staff uniform policy determined by the Association and supervisor.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings as designated by supervisor.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with both members and staff, and give directions in an authoritative yet tactful manner.
  • Ability to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Be familiar with and support the Mission of the YMCA.
  • Ability to adequately observe participant skills, enforce safety regulations, and utilize appropriate instructional and coaching techniques.
