About The Position

The Assistant Superintendent manages staff and resources in an adult correctional facility. This role may involve recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and disciplining staff, as well as supervising staff to ensure training standards are met. The position maintains systems for incarcerated individual case records, confidential files, and management information to monitor workload, supervise program activities, and conduct program evaluation. The Assistant Superintendent may directly manage or develop and coordinate with other agencies on various incarcerated individual programs, including educational, vocational, and therapeutic programs designed to promote incarcerated individual growth and public safety. This role may also act as the facility PREA compliance manager, ADA Site coordinator, and/or site Grievance Coordinator. Responsibilities include participating in public speaking to explain correctional services and secure community involvement, drafting and presenting changes in policies, standards, and operating procedures, and potentially negotiating and monitoring contracts with community service providers. The Assistant Superintendent assumes command in the absence of the superintendent and assists in managing a facility housing adult incarcerated individuals. This role manages assigned in-house programs, may coordinate physical plant issues, oversees appropriate incarcerated individual transfers, and administers policies regarding community re-integration activities. The position may take initial charge of operations in an emergency, manage personnel, financial, and community resources, including expenditure authorization, and ensures equitable workload distribution and quality of services. Additionally, the Assistant Superintendent reviews reports of probation or parole violations, approves warrants, coordinates daily activities with courts and law enforcement agencies, manages classification, case planning, and supervision of probationers, incarcerated individuals, and parolees, and ensures local compliance with Department standards. The role also involves developing programs targeting the incarcerated individual population, administratively overseeing services to incarcerated individuals housed in local lockups, and performing related duties as required.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree AND four (4) years of administrative or supervisory experience in a correctional setting.
OR HS diploma or equivalent AND eight (8) years at a professional level in the broad area of human services, including five (5) years in either a correctional setting or a role requiring frequent interaction with correctional facility administration and incarcerated individuals, coordinating with a correctional facility program, or direct casework with correctional incarcerated individuals.
Must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
Must pass criminal record checks.
Must pass motor vehicle driving record checks.
Must pass national record checks where appropriate.
Provide relevant information regarding substantiated incidences of sexual abuse or resignation during a pending investigation of an allegation of sexual abuse from previous institutional employers.
Certify all information furnished is true and complete.
Candidates with a felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections.
