About The Position

This position provides leadership for Rochester Community Schools to become a world-class educational system by guaranteeing a viable, high-quality curriculum for all students. The role is responsible for the implementation and coordination of secondary curriculum development and instructional services, articulating the secondary and alternative curriculum, and coordinating professional development. The Assistant Superintendent monitors trends in curriculum, instruction, teaching, and learning at state and national levels, and represents the District in these matters. This role also serves as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet, the district 504 Coordinator, and attends Board and Superintendent committee meetings. Additionally, the position provides input to the District-wide budget for secondary education and the curriculum department, supervises and evaluates Secondary Program Consultants, and oversees secondary Learning Consultant and Counseling programs. The role requires staying updated on professional developments and legislation impacting secondary and post-secondary teaching and learning, coordinating the preparation of District-wide course catalogues, and working with Human Resources on secondary staffing. The Assistant Superintendent is also responsible for responding promptly to parental issues and supporting the Superintendent and district leaders in administrative efforts, interpreting their ideas, and keeping them informed of department developments.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree with emphasis on instructional leadership.
  • Valid State of Michigan Teaching and Administrative Certificate.
  • Five years of successful administrative experience, including a minimum of three years of building administrative experience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent presentation and group facilitation skills.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Implementation and coordination of secondary curriculum development and instructional services.
  • Articulation of the secondary and alternative curriculum to the Board, administration, staff, and community.
  • Coordination of professional development related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Monitoring of state and national trends in curriculum, instruction, teaching, and learning.
  • Representation of the District at local, state, and federal levels regarding secondary curriculum and instructional programs.
  • Serving as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet.
  • Serving as the district 504 Coordinator.
  • Attending Board meetings and Superintendent committee meetings.
  • Providing input to the District-wide budget for secondary education and the curriculum department.
  • Supervising and evaluating Secondary Program Consultants in collaboration with other curriculum department Executive Directors and Directors.
  • Overseeing the secondary Learning Consultant and Counseling programs.
  • Keeping abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings and conferences, and reading professional journals and other publications.
  • Keeping abreast of state and federal legislation impacting secondary and post-secondary teaching and learning.
  • Coordinating the preparation of District-wide course catalogues.
  • Working with the Human Resource department on secondary staffing.
  • Responding promptly and appropriately to parental issues.
  • Supporting the Superintendent and district leaders in their overall administrative efforts, interpreting their ideas and decisions to staff and public, keeping them informed on pertinent department developments and events, and seeking their counsel on decisions as necessary.
  • Leading Strategic Plan work.
  • Demonstrating and modeling professional demeanor, resourcefulness, and effective communication strategies with diverse groups.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
