About The Position

A full-time, professional academic staff position is available in the Recreation and Sport Operations department beginning July 6th, 2026. The working title for this assignment is Assistant Strength and Sport Performance Coach with the official title of Strength and Conditioning Assistant Coach. This is a renewable assignment, contingent on performance and funding. The salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Assistant Strength and Performance Coach assists in managing daily operations of over 22,000 square feet of performance training facilities in the McPhee Strength and Performance Center, auxiliary McPhee performance training facility, and assists in maintenance for our Sonnentag training facility. The position assists in managing the Strength and Performance program for athletes and general student population. These facilities are shared-use facilities serving the needs of Recreation, Athletics, Kinesiology, and general students not associated with the before mentioned. In assisting with this type of facility, the individual must be a liaison and work closely with individuals from throughout campus and the community to ensure quality customer service. The individual must be flexible in terms of hours worked; late evenings, weekends, and holiday work will be a necessity. The Assistant Strength and Performance Coach is responsible for assisting with program design, implementation, monitoring and improvement. Other responsibilities include communication with coaches, athletic training staff and administration, while maintaining and organizing training records and facility supervision. Applicants must possess outstanding people skills, leadership skills, and a desire to improve the athletic performance of our members and student athletes while bringing energy and passion to the Recreation department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology or similar field
  • Current CSCS or SCCC certification
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
  • Experience in program design, organization and implementation for intercollegiate athletic programs in an intern capacity or graduate assistant capacity
  • Experience with record keeping of training and testing data
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain professional working relationships with athletic training, academic, and sport coaching staff
  • Communication experience with head sport coaches

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology or similar field
  • 1+ years of collegiate strength and performance experience in an assistant coach capacity
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently and effectively communicate with student-athletes, administration, academics, and other University staff
  • Experience with performance training technology such as TeamBuildr, Catapult GPS, DASHR, VALD, Freelap Timing Systems, Ballistic Ball, Google products, Microsoft office products
  • Experience working with volunteer interns in a supervisory capacity
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusiveness
  • Desire to pursue additional professional development

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate strength and conditioning programs for assigned varsity athletic teams, Recreation sport clubs, and general student population.
  • Work with the Strength and Performance Staff, athletic coaches, and athletic training staff on the development and implementation of comprehensive, annual in-season and off-season strength and conditioning programs to improve athletic performance for 27 university-sponsored programs.
  • Utilize multiple forms of technology to implement, assess, and track performance and share that data accordingly with students and coaches.
  • Deliver programming to student athletes through designated programming software.
  • Make adjustments to training based off testing results.
  • Set-up communication groups with each team of athletes to increase efficiency of training.
  • Meet with the Strength and Performance Staff (at minimum) weekly to review programming, scheduling, and facility needs.
  • Assist the Associate Head Strength and Performance Coach in running a summer strength and performance camp for youth in the area.
  • Assist with apprenticeship curriculum taught to students each semester.
  • Assist in management of McPhee weight room facilities including enforcement of policies and procedures.
  • Monitor, maintain, and assist with Sonnentag weight room equipment and facility upkeep.
  • Communicate extensively with Strength and Performance Staff on facility hours and collaborative programming.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge in this competitive field and keep all relevant professional certifications up to date.
  • Attend all Recreation staff meetings, retreats, special events and trainings.
  • Serves as a point of contact and liaison to coaching staff, medical professionals, and student-athletes to monitor physical health, improve athletic abilities, and provide information and coaching.
  • Assists in in the development and monitoring of individual and team weight training and conditioning programs.
  • Enters and maintains computerized data and tracking of individual and team student-athlete workouts.
  • Assists with the instruction and execution of conditioning simulations and exercises for a designated athletic team, provides information, and consults with student-athletes regarding weight lifting and conditioning techniques and safety.
