About The Position

The Assistant Store Manager role at Goodwill of Colorado is a high-visibility, hands-on leadership position perfect for experienced managers from retail, hospitality, or production who have led teams of 20-30 people. This role is not entry-level and requires strong operators with solid customer service, financial, and team development skills. The Assistant Manager will manage the daily operations of a retail store, acting as the Retail Store Manager in their absence. They will support the store's responsibility for meeting financial goals to generate income and donations for Goodwill's mission operations and community programs. Assistant Managers must be empowering leaders who can operate and manage diverse departments, inspire and develop staff, and take an active role in achieving success. They will be held accountable for their performance and share accountability for the store's performance with the Retail Store Manager. Key responsibilities include managing merchandising, donation collection, loss prevention, point-of-sale systems, product pricing, building community rapport, and customer relations, while empowering staff. The Assistant Manager will also support the Retail Store Manager with budgeting, financial reporting, and profit and loss statements. The role involves ensuring efficient donation collection, product processing, waste management, warehousing, merchandising, competitive pricing, and excellent customer service to achieve optimal performance. Assistant Managers are expected to be team players who can manage change while motivating and inspiring others. The Bench Assistant Manager role is designed to meet dynamic business needs and may require assignments in locations beyond the immediate geographic area, including providing coverage for absences, facilitating growth and training, collaborating with management, and contributing to business development.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years supervising Retail Operations (or similar) with experience of being held accountable and responsible for the success of the business, operations and financial results of a function or department.
  • Proficient in the utilization of office equipment, office software (i.e. Word, Excel) and web-based applications (i.e. UKG).
  • Ability to manage corporate email and calendar (i.e. Outlook).
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple projects, people, and retail store functions.
  • Ability to work within a deadline-pressured environment.
  • An understanding of marketing and retail principles.
  • An understanding of production processes and environment, including deadlines, quality control, working in a quick and efficient manner and empowering staff to produce product(s) in a timely manner.
  • Ability to create, review and understand statistical information to increase the success of the retail store.
  • Ability to understand, analyze and scrutinize financial statements.
  • Ability to adapt, adjust, and mold to changing circumstances.

  • In coordination with the Retail Store Manager must be able to work any hours necessary to provide complete store coverage and supervision.
  • Responsible for reporting to the Goodwill of Colorado administrative offices (GOG located in Colorado Springs and/or Federal located in Denver) when assigned for trainings, meetings, etc.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado State driver license.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age (for insurance purposes).
  • Must have valid vehicle insurance, valid driver license, and vehicle must be in roadworthy condition if using personal vehicle for company business.
  • Must undergo a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and background check.
  • Must disclose all moving traffic violations or vehicle crashes within the last five (5) years.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of a retail store.

  • Promote safety for all employees, ensuring adherence to OSHA and CARF standards.
  • Use and become certified on pallet jack, walkie stacker, forklift, hand dolly, or other equipment or tools.
  • Maintain a functional awareness of competition and retail trends, and suggest appropriate courses of action.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of the point-of-sale (POS) system.
  • Empower, lead, and manage retail store staff, ensuring safety, productivity, and success.
  • Oversee daily operations of all retail store functional areas including sales floor, store front, donation store, production areas, moving product internally, and storage facilities.
  • Directly responsible for hiring, performance management, employee goal setting, and recommendations toward termination in at least one department.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and adhere to Goodwill policies, the Employee Handbook, safety standards, and all numbered/supplemental policies.
  • Partner with the Retail Store Manager to conduct meetings for employee training, awareness, and knowledge transfer.
  • Be on call for alarm notifications after hours.
  • Provide coverage for unexpected or planned absences (Bench Assistant Manager).
  • Facilitate growth and training for team members (Bench Assistant Manager).
  • Collaborate with other management personnel to enhance store performance (Bench Assistant Manager).
  • Contribute to business development initiatives (Bench Assistant Manager).
