The Washington State Auditor's Office (SAO) is seeking innovative and talented individuals to join their team as an Assistant State Auditor. The Assistant State Auditor position is part of an in-training program designed to develop auditing skills. The specific level (1, 2, or 3) will be determined by a combination of education, experience, and demonstrated competencies. The role involves conducting various types of audits for local governments, providing valuable recommendations for improvement, and promoting positive working relationships with clients. Team Port Orchard, one of 17 local audit teams, is responsible for audits in Kitsap, Mason, Jefferson, Clallam, and portions of Pierce and King Counties, covering a wide array of entity types. The work is performed in a hybrid environment, requiring occasional travel to client locations. Requirements

  • Team Collaboration: Ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Assistant State Auditor 1: Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three college-level accounting courses OR 4-years of business or relevant experience (minimum 1-year in accounting/auditing) OR any equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Assistant State Auditor 2: Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three college-level accounting courses and one year of relevant experience OR 5-years of business or relevant experience (minimum 2-years in accounting/auditing) OR any equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Assistant State Auditor 3: Bachelor's degree and completion of at least three college-level accounting classes and two years of relevant experience OR 6-years of relevant experience (minimum 3-years in accounting or auditing) OR any equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience is defined as experience in accounting, auditing, finance, banking, or financial investigations.

Nice To Haves

  • Government audit experience preferred (for ASA 2 and ASA 3).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct accountability, financial, and federal grant compliance audits.
  • Plan and conduct risk-based financial and legal compliance audits of Washington State agencies and local governments.
  • Perform special investigations pertaining to citizen concerns and/or frauds.
  • Review the work of and provide mentoring to in-training level staff (for ASA 3).
  • Participate in client discussions and/or presentations under the guidance of a supervisor or Audit Lead (for ASA 2).
  • Work in teams to complete most work in the field at the governmental entity.
