About The Position

Grays Harbor College Athletic Department invites applications for the position of Assistant Coach for Intercollegiate Softball. Reporting to the Head softball coach, and the Director of Athletics, the selected candidate will be responsible for working with the head coach of the softball program, ensuring compliance with the athletic department, college, and Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) guidelines. The Assistant Coach holds the primary role in fostering a holistic collegiate softball journey for student-athletes, emphasizing academic success, competitive athletics, and personal growth opportunities. This is a part-time, non-tenure position without benefits eligibility. This position is for the 26-27 academic school year and can start as soon as July 1, 2026. Grays Harbor College serves the communities of Grays Harbor and Pacific counties on the Pacific coast of Washington. Located in Aberdeen, Washington at the base of the beautiful Olympic Peninsula, the College is less than an hour away from scenic Pacific Ocean beaches and close to both the Olympic and Mount Rainier National Parks. Requirements

  • Associates Degree
  • Demonstrated experience as a softball coach/assistant
  • Availability to attend practices and games on weekday afternoons and evenings, and weekends
  • Demonstrated understanding of NCAA and NWAC softball rules and regulations or willingness to learn
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain certification prior to first practice
  • Availability to travel out of state as needed
  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Valid unrestricted Washington Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Assist the head coach in planning and conducting practices, including individual skill development.
  • Teach softball fundamentals, techniques, and strategies to prepare student-athletes for intercollegiate competition.
  • Support game preparation, including scouting reports, strategy development, and in-game adjustments.
  • Recruit student-athletes in compliance with Northwest Athletic Conference and institutional guidelines.
  • Coordinate and participate in recruiting activities including campus visits, tours, and ongoing communication with prospects and families.
  • Scout prospective student-athletes at high school games, showcases and tournaments.
  • Analyze game film and performance data to support player and team development.
  • Assist in the developing practices plans and competitive schedules in alignment with department goals and budget guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional and conference rules and regulations.
  • Monitor and support student-athletes academic progress and overall well-being.
  • Represent the program at community outreach events, including camps, clinics and fundraisers.
  • Build and maintain relationships with alumni, supporters, and community partners.
  • Collaborate and network with coaches and professionals to support program growth.
  • Maintain effective communication with coaching staff, student-athletes, and athletic department personnel.
  • Serve as a liaison between student-athletes and coaching staff.
  • Assist with budget management and coordinate team fundraising efforts.
  • Maintain required certifications (e.g., van training) and transport student-athletes as needed.
  • Adhere to the Athletic Department policies and the Coaches Handbook.
  • Attend department meetings and fulfill administrative responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assist with end of season evaluations, including exit interviews and student-athlete surveys.
