About The Position

The Assistant Scenic Charge Artist assists with the day to day managing of the paint shop, paint staff, and the flow of scenery between shops and theaters. They participate in painting, shop maintenance, and assist in teaching scenic art apprentices both in technique and good work habits. The rate for this full-time seasonal role is $39.50 per hour with an offer of 40 hours a week for 42 weeks. This position is part of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, its Territories and Canada, AFL-CIO, CLC. Requirements

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times in a fast paced, high intensity environment
  • Three years’ experience as a scenic artist in a professional setting.
  • Three years’ experience working in theater.
  • Computer literacy, specifically in Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in commercial fabrication shops.
  • Experience working in off Broadway, regional theater, and/or summer stock.
  • Experience working in an educational institution.
  • Theatrical Degree in Theater Design or Theater Production – or – a Certificate in Scenic Art.
  • Previous experience working with young scenic artists

Responsibilities

  • Works with Scenic Charge Artist to determine and execute daily work schedule, workflow, management of the shop floor, and the assignment of tasks.
  • Works with the TD's, Lead carpenters, and other shops as point person for daily flow of scenery between shops and spaces.
  • Participates in the painting and back painting of scenery, props, and performance space maintenance as necessary.
  • Helps maintain safe and tidy workstations and moves those stations in and out of performance spaces as necessary.
  • Monitors the quality of the finished product and points out concerns to Scenic Charge Artist.
  • Assists the Scenic Charge Artist in monitoring workflow and deadlines in order to make adjustments to production process as needed.
  • Communicates changes to TD's, PM's, and designers.
  • Monitors the maintenance of the shop and its tools and completes or assigns maintenance and cleaning tasks as needed.
  • Keeps abreast of communication with designers and leads communication on specific items or shows as assigned.
  • Assists Scenic Charge Artist to ensure that timesheets are filled out at the end of each workday by all paint shop staff and overhire.
  • Assists Charge with payroll and accounts payable as assigned.
  • Maintains inventory, with the help of apprentices, and leads in material sourcing, purchasing, acquisition, and paperwork as requested.
  • Attends staff meetings, production meetings, and rehearsals as assigned.
  • Is expected to have some flexibility of schedule to accommodate rehearsals or shifted calls as necessary.
