About The Position

This recruitment is being established to fill a position located in Los Banos, CA. The Assistant Road Supervisor will assist the District Road Supervisor in supervising, instructing, assisting, and inspecting the work of road crews. Responsibilities include overseeing activities such as patching, resurfacing, and maintaining paved and surfaced roads, repairing and constructing culverts and small bridges, and removing obstructions, brush, and weeds from right-of-way and shoulders. The role may also involve operating heavy equipment or performing other duties when not supervising crews, inspecting County roads and reporting findings, keeping time and equipment records, assisting in employee performance evaluations, reviewing timecards, and conducting inventory of supplies, fuels, and materials. The position also requires responding to public complaints and instructing crews on operating safety practices.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible road construction and maintenance experience, including one (1) year performing duties comparable to those of Road Maintenance Worker III in Merced County.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver's license.
  • Operate a personal computer and other modern office equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with others in person and over the telephone.
  • Analyze data, interpret directions, procedures and regulations, and develop appropriate responses.
  • Perform job duties under stressful conditions.
  • Respond appropriately to situations.
  • Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations.
  • Lift and move with help objects weighing over 100 pounds.
  • Wear a respirator, safety glasses or other protective clothing and equipment, as needed.
  • Conduct activities on uneven surfaces under various environmental conditions.
  • Frequently operate large, heavy equipment on uneven and/or rough terrain.
  • Frequently drive vehicles and maintain equipment.
  • Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception.
  • Sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.
  • Occasionally kneel, bend, twist, squat, climb, balance and crawl.
  • Frequent repetitive hand and arm motion.
  • Occasional risk of exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Normal dexterity, frequent holding, grasping, repetitive motion.
  • Frequent exposure to noise.
  • Constant use of hand/eye coordination.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function.
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision and training.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, tools, and materials used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of a variety of medium and heavy road maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of provisions of the California Vehicle Code relating to the operation of medium and heavy equipment on streets and roads.
  • Knowledge of geography and road names of a Merced County Road maintenance district.
  • Knowledge of safe work practice and State and Federal safety regulations.
  • Ability to oversee and train subordinate employees.
  • Ability to supervise and train subordinate employees.
  • Ability to inspect and report on road condition.
  • Ability to skillfully and safely operate a variety of medium and heavy road maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to keep time and equipment records.

Responsibilities
