About The Position

WSP is seeking an Assistant Resident Engineer in New York, New York. This role is part of a dynamic, national professional construction management organization that fosters careers and expands its client base in the New York area. The position involves managing inspection and office staff, overseeing record keeping, correspondence, and report compilation. The Assistant Resident Engineer will chair project meetings, monitor contractor performance, review and approve daily inspection reports and payment quantities according to NYSDOT requirements, and prepare Change Orders. This role also includes coordinating responses to contractor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings, ensuring site safety, permit compliance, and coordination with adjacent projects. Additionally, the position requires public outreach regarding upcoming work and impacts, collaboration with contractors to minimize disruptions, and working with engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on various improvement projects. Ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adherence to WSP's Code of Conduct are essential. Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on business needs.

Requirements

  • BS in Engineering or equivalent.
  • 7-10 years experience in highway and bridge related construction
  • OSHA 10 Hour Certification.
  • Past experience with NYSDOT, NYSTA, MTA Bridges & Tunnels and other projects including highways, bridges and utilities.
  • Ability to supervise inspection staff.
  • Ability to review/approve shop drawings, contractor schedules, permit and inspection requirements.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of Site Manager.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Rail experience is a plus.
  • ACI Certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage inspection and office staff.
  • Responsible for record keeping, correspondence, compiling and delivering of required reports.
  • Chair various project meetings, record and distribute meeting minutes.
  • Monitoring Contractor performance, scheduling, effectiveness and quality control.
  • Review and approve daily inspection reports and payment quantities in accordance with NYSDOT requirements.
  • Prepare Change Orders for overruns, changed conditions and additional work.
  • Log and Coordinate with the designer to respond to Contractors’ submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings.
  • Ensure site safety, permit compliance and coordination with other adjacent projects.
  • Work with client to inform public about upcoming work and potential impacts. Work with the Contractor to minimize disruptions to the public.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
