About The Position

This Engineer I position serves as Assistant Resident Engineer in the Aberdeen Resident Engineer’s Office within the NC Department of Transportation, Division of Highways. The role involves assisting the Resident Engineer in the day-to-day management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects constructed by private contractors. The position also includes supervising lower-level technicians. The work contributes to NCDOT's mission to connect people, products, and places safely and efficiently, with a focus on customer service, accountability, and environmental sensitivity to enhance North Carolina's economy and vitality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment
  • Experience using computers and electronic tablets
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to apply Department safety standards and program to operations
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle
  • Safety toe shoes required
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors

  • Experience in directing, assisting, or training of sub-ordinate employees

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Resident Engineer in providing day-to-day management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects constructed by private contractors
  • Supervision of lower-level technicians
  • Performing project field inspections
  • Preparing monthly/final pay estimates
  • Creating, reviewing, and evaluating supplemental agreements and claims
  • Ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements
  • Resolve constructability issues
  • Serve as DOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the general public
  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing
  • Make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment
  • Apply Department safety standards and program to operations
  • Legally operate a motor vehicle
