Assistant Research Scientist

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory•Princeton, NJ
•$74,700 - $119,300

About The Position

The Assistant Research Scientist will support laboratory research operations within the Quantum Diamond Laboratory, using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition reactors to grow quantum- and microelectronics-grade diamond. Working with scientists at PPPL and collaborators at Princeton University, the successful candidate will conduct plasma, surface, and materials-science experiments and synthesize diamond materials and devices with potential commercial applications. The role includes assisting with growth of high-purity single-crystal diamond, fabricating diamond-based quantum and photonic devices, collaborating across scientific and engineering disciplines, preparing research findings for publication, and maintaining equipment and laboratory safety. Standard daytime working hours are expected. The position is full-time, has a 40-hour standard workweek, is not eligible for overtime, and is benefits-eligible.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training and/or experience in a technical area such as Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Availability for standard daytime working hours.
  • Ability to follow operating procedures and execute experimental protocols.
  • Ability to document experimental outcomes and communicate results in written and non-written formats.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory safety concepts and ability to follow safety protocols.
  • Ability to work effectively in team environments and conduct unsupervised experimental activities.
  • Ability to stand for long periods during experiments, work in cleanroom or controlled environments, and wear safety glasses and gloves.
  • Ability to routinely lift 10–25 lbs and sometimes lift up to 40–50 lbs with assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in CVD growth of single-crystal diamond or related materials deposition and epitaxy experiments.
  • Experience in nanofabrication and developing quantum, photonic structures, and/or microelectronic devices.
  • Hands-on experience with characterization techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), SEM, AFM, EPR, TEM, XPS, or XRD.
  • Familiarity with plasma physics, quantum devices, or quantum information platforms based on solid-state defects.
  • Scientific communication skills, including report writing, and exposure to data analysis techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with experiments to grow high-purity single-crystal diamond using chemical vapor deposition, controlling defect incorporation, electronic dopants, and bespoke defects for quantum applications such as NV and related color centers.
  • Conduct supervised and unsupervised fabrication processes for diamond-based quantum and photonic devices, including surface processing, patterning, and integration of microwave and optical structures.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in materials science, quantum physics, and device engineering.
  • Assist in preparing and publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, follow safety protocols, and contribute to a safe and efficient research environment.
  • Follow operating procedures, execute experimental protocols, document outcomes, and communicate results.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefit program for eligible employees.
