About The Position

Under general supervision, the Assistant Reference Librarian analyzes clientele needs, interprets University Library & Archives resources, and facilitates their use by students, faculty, support staff, and other members of the academic community. This is a part-time, temporary/casual staff position with fixed term employment. The role involves providing advanced customer service, conducting interviews to recommend resources, and responding to complex research questions. The position also requires creating and editing departmental publications, analyzing operations, and determining problem resolutions. Staffing the research help desk during evening and weekend hours is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to take initiative.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years in an academic library, public library, specialized library, archive, or other related educational setting.
  • Professional library experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the use of library and archives resources, including the online library catalog, electronic databases, print and non-print indexes, abstracts, reference materials, and online and Internet resources.
  • Provides advanced customer service, including using virtual reference and chat support venues for library users.
  • Conducts clientele interviews to recommend effective and appropriate information resources.
  • Responds to escalated requests for assistance and more complex, non-routine resource questions as a subject matter expert. Refers to sources, places, and individuals when local sources are insufficient.
  • Provides explanations and instructions for department/unit employees.
  • Provides support for a range of in-depth, specialized questions in research resources and databases.
  • Creates and edits departmental publications, as requested.
  • Analyzes and organizes operations and determines problem resolutions.
  • Provides staffing for the research help desk during evening and weekend hours as assigned.
