About The Position

The Town of Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation department is recruiting for an Assistant Recreation Supervisor at the Hargraves Community Center. This position assists with the daily programming and management of the Hargraves Community Center, Nate Davis Senior Gymnasium, youth and teen programming, afterschool programs, and community events. The role involves planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and events for all ages, marketing these activities, assisting with budget management, writing contracts, placing purchase orders, and performing administrative duties. Additionally, the position assists with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training staff, and approving work schedules. The Hargraves Community Center has a rich history as a gathering place for Chapel Hill's Black community and is a historic landmark on the North Carolina Civil Rights Trail.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two or more years’ experience working in parks and recreation in the areas of community/recreation centers, youth programming and teen programming, and afterschool and/or day camps.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working in parks and recreation or related field with lead or senior capacity required.
  • Knowledge of Town and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Department rules and regulations and relevant town ordinances.
  • Knowledge of Department programs and activities.
  • Knowledge of First-Aid and CPR techniques.
  • Knowledge of contract negotiation and preparation.
  • Knowledge of community volunteer recruiting and development resources.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of basic budgeting.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws including OSHA and safety rules and regulations and the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Knowledge of high-quality customer service and departmental information.
  • Knowledge of large group dynamics.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations and policies appropriately.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate events.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and organized files.
  • Ability to prepare and compile clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to use web-based software systems.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or similar tools.
  • Ability to solve problems and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • A valid NC driver’s license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to provide transportation between job sites is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years planning and implementing recreation programming in the areas of youth and teen programming, afterschool, and community events preferred.
  • Certified American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor.
  • Speak well enough to effectively communicate with patrons in Burmese, Karen, Spanish and/or Mandarin.
  • Have experience working with children on the autism spectrum, with Down Syndrome, or with other developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the supervision and management of the operations and programming of the Hargraves Community Center and Nate Davis Senior Gymnasiums.
  • Provides and directs administrative and customer services duties.
  • Plans, leads, coordinates, and evaluates youth and teen programs, including afterschool programs.
  • Plans, leads, coordinates, and evaluates community events.
  • Assists in program coordination for all other recreation program areas.
  • Utilizes recreation software for activity maintenance and generating reports.
  • Supervises the delivery, setup, and breakdown of programs and events.
  • Manages multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Maintains office supplies.
  • Monitors safety training and compliance.
  • Completes weekly and monthly reports.
  • Establishes program and special event budgets, tracks expenditures, and creates accurate revenue and expense reports.
  • Purchases and receives supplies for programs and events; submits and monitors vendor contracts.
  • Completes facility safety checks and evaluations.
  • Assists with the development and implementation and evaluation of programs and events including budgets, expenditures, and accurate revenue and expense reports.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates full-time staff, program support staff, and volunteers.
  • Assists with developing and implementing successful marketing campaigns, creating marketing materials, and determining best practices for marketing to the target market.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned.
