About The Position

The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is seeking an Assistant Recording Engineer to assist the Lead Recording Engineer in managing, planning, and implementing all recorded and electronic media activity at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood. This includes concerts, rehearsals, television, and recording projects for various BSO ensembles and the Tanglewood Music Center. The role also involves assisting with recording and livestream broadcasts for rental clients, and engineering lawn sound for events at the Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years related experience in recording classical music.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in audio recording/editing/mixing.
  • Knowledge of orchestral recording techniques.
  • Ability to read music and follow an orchestral score.
  • Proven ability in managing and completing multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other Concert Production staff as part of a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to work well with guest recording engineers, orchestra members, conductors, guest artists and their managers, and music industry executives.
  • Accessing ladders, attic spaces, catwalks, etc. for hanging microphones.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with television and radio production is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all BSO, Inc. audio recordings to ensure consistency and the highest technical/aesthetic quality.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the BSO’s high-resolution state-of-the-art recording system, including computers, software, and hardware for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering.
  • Assist with the research, design, and creation of upgrades to all BSO recording and live sound systems.
  • Assist in managing and maintaining the recording infrastructure, including portable recording equipment and studios.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of all future system upgrades.
  • Make recommendations for equipment and software purchases with cost and benefit justifications.
  • Assist in managing and troubleshooting complex networked audio systems (AoIP), including configuration of network switches, VLANs, and synchronization protocols.
  • Record and engineer BSO concerts and assist outside engineers for live broadcasts and recordings.
  • Record, edit, and mix outside concerts/shows at Symphony Hall and interface with outside clients.
  • Provide high-quality audio feeds to members of the press.
  • Work with Marketing and Development teams to create audio material for promotional assets.
  • Engineer and provide field audio and post-production for the media department's video interviews.
  • Engineer and record podcasts and other necessary voice-over sessions.
  • Design and implement microphone layouts for optimal sound quality.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of best practices for the long-term preservation and access to BSO audio and video material.
  • Create audio files in various formats to support the Archives Department.
  • Assist and support live sound personnel as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
