APD: Motions & Appeals Specialist

Kalamazoo Defender•Kalamazoo, MI
•$128,500 - $137,096

About The Position

Kalamazoo Defender is seeking a full-time attorney to serve as a Motions and Appeals Specialist. This position develops and implements policies, procedures, and practices to advance appellate and motion work throughout Michigan courts. The attorney handles appeals, coordinates motion practices, and trains staff to improve indigent defense. The role does not carry an independent caseload; instead, it supports the legal staff and designs and leads monthly training sessions. The position reports directly to the Deputy Chief Defender and works closely with attorney leadership to establish and share best practices across the team. The successful candidate will be committed to holistic defense, zealous client representation, and strong communication with multidisciplinary defense team members. The role calls for a deep understanding of the Michigan appeals process, strong written advocacy, and a commitment to educating others to improve their motions and appeals. Kalamazoo Defender is an independent nonprofit providing legal representation to adults charged with crimes in Kalamazoo County who cannot afford counsel. Its holistic approach connects clients with relevant community support services and addresses needs beyond their legal cases. The organization’s mission centers on justice in court, care in the community, and dignity for clients facing systemic barriers.
