About The Position

The Assistant Program Advisor Trainee, Greek Life (APAT) is a trainee level appointment working under the lead direction of the Assistant Director and with close supervision of the AVP/Sr Director. During the trainee period, which is not to exceed 12 months, the APAT is expected to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to function under general supervision at the SSP IB working level. The incumbent assists the Assistant Director through clearly defined efforts to deliver integrated support services and programming aimed at improving students’ academic success, leadership, professional development, retention, and enrichment of the overall student experience. The APAT contributes to the development and execution of intentional student involvement and engagement programs, activities and events and will also advise student-led clubs and organizations, with an emphasis in Greek Life.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior and the ability to apply that knowledge when supporting student leaders, chapters, governing councils, and students with differing needs, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Working knowledge of research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information.
  • Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing and advising to understand student needs, clarify concerns, provide accurate information, and help students identify appropriate options and next steps.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate program improvements for student programs, workshops, events, and leadership-development initiatives.
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences and interviews.
  • Ability to clearly express ideas and recommendations orally, to write clear and concise reports, and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, alumni/graduate advisors, inter/national organization representatives and members of the community.
  • Satisfactory completion of the background check process.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting, advising, or working with student-led clubs, fraternal organizations, governing councils, or campus engagement initiatives in a college or university environment.
  • Experience coordinating programs, workshops, events, or projects involving multiple participants, deadlines, and campus or community partners.
  • Experience working collaboratively with colleagues and constituents from diverse backgrounds in a dynamic, service-oriented environment.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advanced notice.
  • Familiarity with different fraternity and sorority council models and the distinct histories, structures, traditions, and needs represented within a diverse fraternity and sorority community.
  • Membership in a social Greek organization.
