About The Position

The Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry. The successful candidate will have a strong background in algebraic geometry, algebraic combinatorics, geometric representation theory, or related areas. Research interests may include, but are not limited to, classical and quantum Schubert calculus, toric and tropical geometry, and combinatorial Hodge theory. This position builds on our existing strengths in algebraic combinatorics and will expand our presence in areas of algebraic geometry where combinatorial structures and computational methods play a central role. The hire will also contribute to our long-term goal of strengthening and broadening the department’s research profile in geometry and topology. Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Mathematics is anticipated; however, exceptional candidates may be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor of Mathematics. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a distinguished research program and to provide effective instruction and advising to a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students. Additional responsibilities include travel to attend conferences and meetings, as well as service to the department, college, university and professional community. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, curriculum development, or outreach initiatives with other members of the Virginia Tech faculty. Requirements

  • Hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a related field by the time of appointment.
  • Have an active research program in combinatorial algebraic geometry, broadly construed.
  • Have a strong background in algebraic geometry, algebraic combinatorics, geometric representation theory, or related areas.
