About The Position

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track faculty position in the School of Accountancy to begin in August 2027. The successful candidate will primarily teach undergraduate and graduate courses in financial or cost/managerial accounting, with possible teaching duties in tax as needed. The candidate will be required to teach at the Hattiesburg campus and online/hybrid courses using various forms of technology. The School of Accountancy is separately accredited by AACSB and offers undergraduate and master degrees with an extensive network of alumni in local, state, and federal service. The Hattiesburg area has an estimated population of approximately 150,000 and is one of the fastest growing regions in the State of Mississippi. The main campus is located in the culturally diverse and economically dynamic southern part of Mississippi about 65 miles from the Gulf Coast. Requirements

  • An earned doctorate (or ABD) in Accounting or other appropriate related field from an AACSB accredited institution.
  • Meet the requirements of a scholarly academic in accounting for AACSB accreditation purposes.
  • For candidates with prior employment in higher education, evidence of excellence in collegiate teaching and institutional/professional service is required.
  • Ability to teach effectively (both online and in traditional settings) at the university level.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven track record of innovative teaching practices and research impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds, programs, and colleges.
  • Knowledge of the field of accounting and taxation.
  • The ability to navigate and use learning management systems for teaching, such as Canvas, as well as other technological communications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Proficiency in teaching strategies and techniques for diverse student populations.
  • Currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without the need for visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in public or corporate accounting or taxation.
  • Professional certification (CPA, CMA, licensed attorney, etc.).
  • Experience in teaching hybrid/flipped/online classes.
  • Evidence of potential for excellence in scholarly research.
  • ABD applicants must have completed all doctoral course requirements and qualifying exams and must persuasively demonstrate that all degree requirements will be completed before the start of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Publishing in highly-rated accounting journals.
  • Engaging in scholarly, professional, and pedagogical research to extend the knowledge boundaries of the accounting discipline while maintaining the currency of their academic/professional qualifications and the school’s curriculum.
  • Excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting.
  • Service to the School of Accountancy, College of Business and Economic Development, university, and the academy.
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses either in financial or cost/managerial accounting.
  • Potentially teaching one or more courses in taxation as a secondary area of teaching.
  • Teaching classes in other areas as needed, with efforts to find opportunities to teach in the faculty member's special areas of expertise.
  • Teaching classes on-campus, online, or hybrid.
  • Demonstrating a collegial and team-oriented approach to research, teaching, and service.
  • Devotion to teaching excellence at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to student success.
  • Actively engaging in assurance of learning processes.
  • Contributing to the maintenance of separate AACSB accreditation.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
