About The Position

California State University (CSU), Chico is seeking an Assistant Tenure-Track Professor to serve as the Director of Bands. This position is part of the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance within the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The university is a comprehensive and residential public university with Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) designation, committed to recruiting outstanding candidates who embrace values of student success, equity, and inclusivity. The position begins in Fall 2027.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in music or music education
  • Experience in directing/conducting collegiate or university band/wind ensembles
  • Experience teaching classes in the area of music education
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Evidence of commitment to or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Cover letter including how you have addressed, or plan to address, teaching to diverse student groups, how you would be successful in the possible teaching assignments listed under responsibilities, your plans for and previous success in recruitment activities, your rehearsal procedures/philosophy, and any other ways you feel you might contribute to the department

Responsibilities

  • Directing/conducting the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Pep Band
  • Administering the band program with a strong focus on recruitment and outreach
  • Teaching fundamentals of conducting, instrumental conducting, and school instrumental techniques
  • Providing leadership for the student band staff
  • Potentially teaching in other related music areas within music education and the music core (music theory, music history, ear training, music fundamentals, etc.)
  • Teaching studio instruction
  • Mounting/organizing productions and important events such as Hiestand Memorial Alumni and Friends Concert, Choose Chico Day
  • Working with the Director of Choral Activities for the scholarship fundraiser Glorious Sounds of the Season
