About The Position

The Division of Social Sciences at the University of Hawai‘i – West O‘ahu invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Political Science position. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach a variety of Political Science courses, as well as Social Sciences foundation courses, contingent on the needs of the Political Science concentration and the Division of Social Sciences, respectively. Specializing in serving a large Native Hawaiian population, effective teaching is the primary mission of this position at UH West O‘ahu. The area of specialization is open; however, the successful candidate position is expected to contribute to the course offerings of the Division of Social Sciences, including supervising the Legislative Internship courses.

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited university in Political Science. An ABD will be considered, provided applicant completes dissertation by date of hire.
  • Excellence in teaching as demonstrated by student evaluations and/or administrative reviews.
  • Active scholarly research agenda demonstrated by peer-reviewed publication(s) and presentations at professional conferences.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach experiential learning courses with a focus on law and society, public policy, and political economy.

  • Proven ability to write and/or administer grants.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a variety of existing lower and upper-level Political Science courses including, but not limited to: Introduction to Political Science, Constitutional Law, Politics of Public Policy, Hawai‘i Politics, Pacific Asian Politics, Senior Capstone, and other courses as necessary to meet the needs of the program.
  • The regular teaching load is three courses per semester, delivered both traditional in-person as well as online classes.
  • Conduct scholarly and research activities in areas related to discipline.
  • Participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods.
  • Serve on program, division, and university committees.
  • Render service to the professional and community relevant to academic specialty.
  • Serve as faculty advisor for students in the program.
  • Other related tasks as assigned.
