About The Position

The Political Science Department at San José State University is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in U.S. politics with a focus on Latina/o/x/é politics and public policy. The ideal candidate will investigate how Latina/o/x/é political participation and policy preferences impact political representation, power, and policy outcomes in their communities. Additionally, the position involves examining how governing institutions, including immigration law and civil rights, shape policy outcomes in areas such as healthcare, education, legal protections, environmental policy, and social welfare for Latinx/é communities in the U.S. The role includes contributing to program growth through research and teaching, developing new curriculum, and participating in shared governance. Faculty are expected to organize classes within the Canvas Learning Management System and demonstrate awareness of and experience in supporting a diverse student population through inclusive teaching strategies and advisement. All employees are mandated reporters and may be designated as Campus Security Authorities requiring specific training. Compliance with assigned CSU employee training is also required.

Requirements

• Ph.D in Political Science at the time of appointment.
• Broad knowledge and expertise in Latina/o/x/é politics and policy in U.S. politics.
• Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

• Demonstrated teaching experience or potential to teach effectively in Latina/o/x/é politics and policy and additional courses in our curriculum, such as Essentials in U.S and California Government, Race and Politics, American Public Policy, Environmental Policy, Law and Society, and/or Political Science Research Methods.
• Demonstrated ability or strong potential to develop and maintain an active research agenda with publications appropriate to the political science discipline.
• Ability to conduct research, scholarship or creative activity in Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Support enrollment growth through new curriculum development in Latina/o/x/é politics within the context of U.S. politics.
• Teach political science courses commensurate with the successful applicant’s area of expertise and department needs.
• Participate in shared governance, including department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
• Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
• Comply with requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment (mandated reporter).
• Complete Clery Act training and immediately report Clery incidents if designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
• Complete assigned and required CSU employee training (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety).
• Comply with safety measures that decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness as recommended or required by the President.
