About The Position

The Political Science Department at San José State University is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in U.S. politics with a specialization in Latina/o/x/é politics and public policy. The position focuses on scholars investigating the influence of Latina/o/x/é political participation and policy preferences on political representation, power, and policy outcomes in Latinx/o/x/é communities. Candidates are also sought for their work on how governing institutions shape policy outcomes in areas such as health care, education, legal protections, environmental policy, and social welfare in these communities. The role involves contributing to program growth through research and teaching relevant to students. The department, founded in 1962, has 25 faculty and approximately 350 majors and minors, offering a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and three minors. The College of Social Sciences is committed to equitable and inclusive teaching and learning, supporting faculty and student success through culturally-sustaining approaches and faculty development. San José State University, a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), enrolls over 40,000 students, many of whom are underserved, first-generation, or Pell Grant recipients. Requirements

• Ph.D in Political Science at the time of appointment.
• Broad knowledge and expertise in Latina/o/x/é politics and policy in U.S. politics.
• Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

• Demonstrated teaching experience or potential to teach effectively in Latina/o/x/é politics and policy and additional courses in our curriculum, such as Essentials in U.S and California Government, Race and Politics, American Public Policy, Environmental Policy, Law and Society, and/or Political Science Research Methods.
• Demonstrated ability or strong potential to develop and maintain an active research agenda with publications appropriate to the political science discipline.
• Ability to conduct research, scholarship or creative activity in Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Support enrollment growth through new curriculum development in Latina/o/x/é politics within the context of U.S. politics.
• Teach political science courses commensurate with the successful applicant’s area of expertise and department needs.
• Participate in shared governance, including department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
• Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
