About The Position

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in partnership with the Institute of Mental Health and the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP), is inviting applications for the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation Professorship in Mental Health. This new endowed professorship is open to qualified applicants for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (tenure). The position will be primarily based at the VFMP site in New Westminster, BC, at the Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre at Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH), serving the Fraser Health Authority. The professorship aims to support mental health research and training, focusing on the mental health challenges of immigrant, ethnically diverse, and refugee populations in the Fraser Health region. The successful candidate will lead a research program, collaborate with clinicians and scientists, and actively support the teaching activities of the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program and the Psychiatry Residency Training Program. They will also provide mentorship to learners and clinicians within Fraser Health. The role involves contributing to an exceptional learning environment, advancing mental health research, and promoting sustainable care for mental illness and addictions.

Requirements

  • MD with certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) or equivalent qualifications in Psychiatry.
  • Demonstrated experience in promoting and supporting evidence-based and culturally appropriate care.
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating alternate and complimentary therapies for patient populations.
  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas: early intervention, concurrent disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, immigrant and refugee populations, alternate and complementary therapies or novel treatment modalities.
  • Clinical experience demonstrating the potential to make a significant contribution to patient care and psychiatric education.
  • If appointed at the Assistant Professor level: demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, demonstrated ability in scholarly activity.
  • If appointed at the Associate Professor level: demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and ability to direct graduate students, evidence of sustained and productive scholarly activity.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a research program that addresses the unique needs of the region’s rapidly growing and culturally diverse population.
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership of Fraser Health, including Regional Department Head, Site Department Head at RCH, and Associate Program Director for Residency Training in Psychiatry, to develop and lead a Fraser-based mental health and addictions research portfolio.
  • Actively participate in the teaching activities of the Department of Psychiatry.
  • Provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners within Fraser Health at its Royal Columbian Hospital.
  • Provide research mentorship to Fraser Health clinicians.
  • Support mental health research and training at the University.
  • Develop and lead a mental health and addictions research portfolio with a focus on the mental health challenges of the immigrant, ethnically diverse, and refugee populations situated in the Fraser Health region of British Columbia.
  • Actively support the teaching activities of the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program and the Psychiatry Residency Training Program based in the Fraser Health Authority.
  • Provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community (for Assistant Professor rank).
  • Participate in the affairs of the Department and the University (for Associate Professor rank).
