Assistant Professor of Sociology Tenure-Track
About The Position
The Sociology Department at Berea College invites applicants with expertise in quantitative research methods for a full-time, tenure-track position with appointment beginning in August 2027. Primary teaching responsibilities will consist of Research Methods, Statistics, and other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. While the primary disciplinary focus of this position is Sociology, candidates holding a terminal degree in Social Work are also encouraged to apply, provided they have the methodological expertise required for the position. All faculty at Berea are also expected to contribute to the General Education Program, advise, and mentor students, engage in ongoing professional and scholarly growth, and provide service to the Department and College. Full-time course load is three courses per semester. Candidates must have completed a PhD or the equivalent in Sociology or Social Work by time of appointment (August 1, 2027). Following long-standing tradition and practice at Berea College, this position includes responsibility for supervising, mentoring, and developing students in the College's integrated Work College Program. This supports student learning, career readiness, and the program's learning goals and outcomes. The Work College Program provides a developmental framework that guides student learning while creating a structured mentorship opportunity, with role-specific training that equips faculty and staff mentors to support student development. Faculty and staff mentors play an essential part in helping students connect their work-learning-service experiences with broader academic, professional, and personal development. For faculty, this aligns with Berea's tenure and promotion criteria.
Requirements
- Completed a PhD or the equivalent in Sociology or Social Work by time of appointment (August 1, 2027).
- Expertise in quantitative methods.
- Experience with quantitative methods.
- Evidence of successful college-level teaching, especially courses in statistics and research methods.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor students.
- Demonstrated commitment to the liberal arts.
- Willingness to contribute to the General Education program, in particular with the teaching of undergraduate writing seminars.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with R and/or other open-access statistical packages.
