About The Position

The Institute for Genomics and Evolutionary Medicine (iGEM) at Temple University is seeking to fill multiple non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Research positions. These roles focus on genetic variation, computational genomics, and molecular evolution. The successful candidates will utilize statistical, computational, and artificial-intelligence methods to analyze genome-scale variation across various levels (individuals, populations, species). Research areas can encompass fundamental or biomedical questions in molecular evolution, phylogenomics, functional genomics, genome dynamics, genetic disease, and phylomedicine. These positions are intended for early-career computational scientists who will initially collaborate closely with an iGEM faculty member while contributing to the institute's overall mission. Responsibilities include taking intellectual leadership on research projects, mentoring students and researchers, and collaborating across iGEM and Temple University. Over time, appointees will be encouraged to develop independent scientific profiles, explore new research avenues, and build their own extramural funding portfolios. The positions offer a blend of intellectual support, collaborative opportunities, and research infrastructure from an established program, with a clear path towards greater scientific independence and leadership.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, evolutionary biology, genomics, computer science or another relevant discipline.
  • A strong record of research productivity appropriate to career stage.
  • Research experience in one or more relevant areas, including molecular evolution, comparative genomics, phylogenetics, population genomics, functional genomics, statistical genetics, computational biology, or genomic data science.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, or apply advanced computational approaches to biological data.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A commitment to collaborative research and the mentoring and training of students and researchers.

Nice To Haves

  • Postdoctoral or equivalent research experience.
  • Experience developing statistical, machine-learning, or artificial-intelligence methods for evolutionary, genomic, or biomedical applications.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas (but not limited to): molecular evolution, natural selection, phylogenomics, functional genomics, genetic disease, genome dynamics, protein evolution, or phylomedicine.
  • Experience analyzing large-scale genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, or comparative datasets.
  • Experience with scientific software development and/or high-performance computing.
  • Evidence of intellectual leadership in collaborative research projects.
  • Experience contributing to manuscripts, grant proposals, or externally funded research programs.
  • Interest in progressively developing an independent research and extramural funding portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply statistical, computational, machine-learning, and deep-learning approaches to address important questions in evolutionary biology, genomics, and biomedicine.
  • Design and implement advanced computational frameworks for analyzing large and complex genomic datasets across individuals, populations, and species.
  • Take intellectual leadership of major research projects, including the formulation of research questions, development of analytical strategies, interpretation of results, and preparation of publications.
  • Produce high-quality research publications and contribute to the development and dissemination of computational methods, software, and reproducible analytical resources.
  • Contribute to ongoing collaborative and grant-funded projects within an iGEM faculty members’ research program.
  • Initiate new research directions and progressively pursue extramural funding as a principal investigator, co-investigator, or key personnel, as appropriate to experience and career stage.
  • Collaborate with faculty, research staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students across iGEM and Temple University.
  • Participate in the co-mentoring and training of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and other trainees.
  • Contribute to the broader scientific activities of iGEM, including seminars, workshops, collaborative meetings and research-development initiatives.
  • Opportunities may also be available to contribute to undergraduate or graduate teaching, workshops, and team-based training activities.
