Assistant Professor of Research, Internal Medicine-Geriatrics
About The Position
The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is undergoing a period of growth and transformation, focusing on advancing its mission in high-value care, research and innovation, and medical education. The department is committed to fostering excellence and seeks faculty passionate about innovation and collaboration. The Division of Geriatrics at UTMB is dedicated to improving the health and independence of older adults through clinical care, education, and research. It offers comprehensive geriatric care in various settings, including a House Call Program for homebound older adults and an Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit. The Division also trains future geriatricians through its fellowship program and integrates geriatric principles into medical education. Research activities focus on healthy aging, dementia care, falls prevention, polypharmacy, and healthcare delivery innovations, in partnership with the Sealy Center on Aging.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD, or equivalent) in a relevant discipline by the time of appointment.
- Postdoctoral research training or equivalent research experience.
- Demonstrated record of scholarly activity, including peer‑reviewed publications.
- Evidence of potential to secure external research funding.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
Nice To Haves
- Prior experience as a Principal Investigator or key personnel on funded research projects.
- Track record of interdisciplinary or team‑based research.
- Experience working with large datasets, clinical research, population health, translational research, or other discipline‑specific methodologies (as applicable).
- Prior mentoring or teaching experience in an academic or research setting.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent and/or collaborative research aligned with departmental and institutional priorities.
- Develop and maintain a focused research program with measurable scholarly output.
- Publish research findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at regional, national, and/or international conferences.
- Prepare and submit grant applications for external funding (e.g., NIH, foundation, industry, or other sponsors).
- Collaborate with faculty, trainees, and research staff across departments, centers, or institutions.
- Provide research mentorship to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, or fellows.
- Participate in teaching activities related to research methods, seminars, or graduate/professional programs, as applicable.
- Participate in division meetings, conferences, and other related activities.
