About The Position

The Religion Department at Dickinson College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Buddhist Studies at the rank of assistant professor, beginning in Fall 2027. This role includes the title of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Professor of Buddhist Studies for the first four years. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in religious studies or a related field by the start of the appointment and demonstrate the ability to teach in Buddhist Studies as well as core Religious Studies courses. The department is seeking candidates with the potential for exceptional teaching and research, who can create inclusive and welcoming learning environments. The teaching load is five courses per year, plus advising senior theses. The incoming colleague will teach courses in their area of expertise and the department’s core courses, including Buddhism; Buddhism and the Environment; Contemplative Practices in Asia; and Religions of Asia. Support will be provided to develop at least two new courses during the pre-tenure cycle, incorporating expertise alongside themes of sustainability, development, and global exchange. Requirements

• Ph.D. in religious studies or a related field in hand by the start of appointment.
• Demonstrated competence in the field of Buddhist Studies.
• Demonstrated competence in the field of Religious Studies.
• Ability to teach Buddhist Studies courses.
• Ability to teach core Religious Studies courses.
• Ability to create learning environments that are inclusive and welcoming to all students.

Nice To Haves

• Work focuses in any era, and in any geographical region (including transnational and diasporic studies of Buddhism).
• Competence in other languages relevant to the study of Buddhism (e.g., Sanskrit, Pali, classical Chinese, and/or vernacular Asian language).

Responsibilities
