About The Position

The Department of Music in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Richmond is seeking a full-time tenure-track Coordinator of Piano Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position begins in the 2027-2028 academic year. The ideal candidate is an active performer with a strong background in Western classical repertoire and piano pedagogy, capable of balancing teaching with ongoing professional activity. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate piano students in private lessons, offering an additional course annually, and collaborating with the department chair to oversee adjunct piano instructors. The department emphasizes integrating creative practice with inquiry to prepare students for lifelong learning and artistic engagement. The university seeks candidates enthusiastic about teaching music majors and non-majors in a liberal arts setting, with the ability to mentor diverse students.

Requirements

  • Doctorate (DMA) in Piano Performance and/or Piano Performance and Pedagogy by the time of appointment.
  • Strong background in Western classical repertoire and piano pedagogy.
  • Ability to teach and mentor students with a wide range of backgrounds, abilities, and musical interests.
  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for teaching music majors and non-majors in a vibrant and demanding undergraduate liberal arts context.
  • Submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, teaching statement, creative activity statement including links to video recordings of two recent performances, and a sample of recent recital programs.
  • Teaching statement should detail the candidate’s teaching philosophy and commitment to educating a diverse student body through inclusive pedagogies.
  • Performance videos should include a total of at least five works displaying the candidate’s range.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a studio of approximately ten undergraduate piano students in private lessons each semester.
