Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry
About The Position
The Science Department at Chatham University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry to begin August 9, 2027. This is a 9-month faculty appointment. We seek a teacher-scholar with expertise in organic chemistry who is committed to excellent undergraduate teaching, student-centered mentoring, laboratory instruction, advising, and contributing to an ACS-accredited/ACS-approved chemistry and biochemistry curriculum. This position will provide stable faculty leadership for the organic chemistry sequence, including Organic Chemistry I and II and associated laboratory instruction. Organic chemistry supports multiple Science Department majors and pre-health pathways, and serves as a prerequisite for advanced chemistry, biochemistry, and laboratory coursework. This position restores essential instructional capacity and supports continuity in a high-enrollment, multi-program course sequence.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
- Demonstrated potential for effective undergraduate teaching.
- Ability to teach organic chemistry lecture and laboratory courses.
- Commitment to inclusive, student-centered teaching, advising, and mentoring.
- Ability to develop a sustainable research program involving undergraduate students.
Nice To Haves
- Experience as the instructor of record for organic chemistry lecture and/or laboratory courses.
- Experience mentoring undergraduate research.
- Research interests that can be supported in a small-college setting.
- Postdoctoral or industry-equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with ACS expectations for undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry programs.
- Interest in contributing to pre-health, biochemistry, or interdisciplinary science programs.
Responsibilities
- Teach an annual load of 18 credits (approximately 6 courses).
- Teach undergraduate organic chemistry lecture and laboratory courses.
- Contribute to general chemistry, advanced chemistry electives, or other courses aligned with departmental need and candidate expertise.
- Maintain a productive scholarly agenda appropriate to a primarily undergraduate institution.
- Develop and maintain an active undergraduate research program.
- Advise undergraduate students in chemistry, biochemistry, pre-health, and related pathways.
- Mentor students in research, academic planning, and career preparation.
- Support laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, and effective laboratory pedagogy.
- Participate in curriculum development, assessment, advising, departmental and University service.
- Contribute to the continued strength of the department’s ACS-accredited/ACS-approved chemistry and biochemistry programs.
